Probiotics & Live Cultures

Not all probiotics or live-culture supplements are the same. The most useful comparison is not simply which pack has the biggest number on the front. Look at the named microorganisms, the full formulation, the intended routine, directions, storage and whether the product is suitable for you.

Short answer: there is no universal live-culture count that everyone needs, and a 20-billion product is not automatically a better choice than a 5-billion product. Evidence is strain-, formulation- and outcome-specific. If you have persistent digestive symptoms, a diagnosed condition, a weakened immune system or take medicines, get appropriate professional advice rather than choosing solely by culture count.

What are probiotics and live cultures?

People commonly search for the word probiotics when looking for products containing live microorganisms. The terminology used on food supplements is regulated differently across markets. For Ireland and Northern Ireland, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland states that “probiotic” is treated as a non-authorised health claim under EU food law and that no probiotic health claims have been approved. For that reason, ARK uses factual wording such as live cultures when describing product contents where appropriate.

For a general NHS overview of the evidence and safety considerations, see NHS: Probiotics. For the regulatory position in Ireland and Northern Ireland, see FSAI: Probiotic Health Claims.

How to compare a live-culture supplement

1. Check the named cultures

Do not assume all species or strains have the same evidence. A result from one microorganism or formulation should not automatically be transferred to another.

2. Read the whole formula

Look at fibre, vitamins, minerals, botanicals, allergens and other ingredients as well as the culture count. The complete formula may matter more to your choice than one headline number.

3. Follow the actual directions

Use the serving and storage instructions supplied with that product. Taking more than directed does not mean a better result.

Does a higher live-culture count mean a better product?

No—not by itself. The number tells you how much live culture is declared for a serving; it does not tell you whether that exact formulation has evidence for the reason you are considering it, whether it suits you personally, or whether it will permanently change your microbiome.

How ARK's live-culture formats differ

The examples below are factual comparisons of current ARK product formats and labels. They are not treatment recommendations.

Product Format and label snapshot Useful comparison point
Soothe Biotix Daily capsule with 10 billion live cultures, including Saccharomyces boulardii, plus selected bacterial cultures, vitamin D and biotin. A capsule format that includes a yeast culture alongside bacterial cultures.
IMMU ProBio Powder sachet with 5 billion live cultures, four named cultures, prebiotic fibre and vitamin D3. A lower-count sachet format designed to be easy to add to a daily routine.
FIT Pro Drink-format sachet with 20 billion live cultures alongside prebiotic fibre, marine collagen, electrolytes, vitamin C and selected minerals. A broader all-in-one drink format rather than a culture-only product.

Always check the current product page and pack before purchase because formulations and directions can change. A higher declared count is not presented here as a stronger or more effective option.

Do you need a live-culture supplement every day?

There is no universal recommendation that every healthy adult needs one. Food, fibre, fluids, movement and your wider health context all matter. If you want a simple food-first framework, read What Is a Simple Daily Routine for Gut Health?

Can a supplement “reset” or restore your microbiome?

That should not be promised. The gut microbiome is complex and varies between people. A labelled live culture should not be assumed to permanently colonise the gut or return an individual's microbiome to an ideal or previous state.

Which product should you choose?

Start with the question you are trying to answer rather than the largest culture count. If you are comparing ARK formats, the Supplement Selector can help narrow the starting point. It is a guidance tool, not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Are all live cultures interchangeable?

No. Different microorganisms, formulations and study outcomes should be considered separately.

Is 20 billion automatically better than 5 billion?

No. Culture count is only one characteristic of a product and should not be used as a stand-alone measure of effectiveness or suitability.

Can I take live-culture supplements with medicines?

Do not assume every combination is suitable. Ask a pharmacist or appropriate healthcare professional if you take medicines, have a medical condition or are unsure about timing.

When should digestive symptoms be medically assessed?

Seek appropriate advice for persistent, severe, worsening or unexplained symptoms, blood in your stool, unintentional weight loss, ongoing diarrhoea, significant pain or other symptoms that concern you.
